Coupe To Fastback Conversion

Here's the story & info on my 1966 Coupe to Fastback conversion.

Here are pics of the 66 coupe that my buddy Lee Byrd & I converted into a 66 Fastback.  We had talked about doing this for awhile but never did.  Then one day Lee was talking about wanting to do the swap on a wrecked Coupe.  So I spoke up & said "Let's do it on MY Coupe"!!!  And so we did!  Lee had 99% of the interior parts to do the job.  The only thing he didn't have was a passenger side door glass.  Which is the reason the top was cut off the fastback to start with, the car had been totaled in a wreck that it was hit on the passenger side door.  Lee replaced the rear floorpans & I replaced the front pans.

I got to Lee's shop the morning of the cut to find that he had already done a ton of measuring.  There were lines & numbers drawn all over my Coupe.  He took almost a full day just measuring & double checking himself.  He was really nervous about the 1st cut.  And I was too, but I didn't tell him.  I had full faith in him, but it was still nerve racking to see the cut-off disc dig into the quarterpanel.  After awhile the nerves went away.  And within an hour we had the top off.  Then we put the Fastback top on for a test fit & it dropped down like a glove.  No binding, it was a perfect fit.  We knew then everything was gonna be ok.

The hardest part of the conversion was welding all the brackets & interior parts in the correct places.

There are a few runs that I'll take care of next week.  The color was exactly what I wanted!

Thanks "Tirefire" (A VMF member).  Currently I'm wetsanding & buffing.  I've finished with the passenger side

& will get the driver side after I finish the run repair.

07-02-05  Update

Been driving the car a good bit lately.  Still waiting on "funds" to get matching bullet mirrors.  I'm thinking about adding the Shelby taillights to it later this year possibility.  New tires are in the near future as is complete exhaust.  I still have a couple of spots on the paint that I want to correct, but I'll wait till winter to do this.

12-29-05:  Resprayed bad spots.

01-01-06:  Cut & buffed & installed new GT-500 chrome mirrors (Christmas present).

The End Results, well for right now anyways. :
