Chipmunks
The photos above were taken by Jim and Terry Gandy (who also do animal rehab in our area). These Chips were very close to being released.
Many of the orphans brought to us are victims of cat attacks. That is why we strongly urge cat owners to keep their cats indoors.
Chipmunks are ground dwellers, but will not hesitate to climb a tree if necessary. They are very focused in their food gathering, collecting acorns and hickory nuts and by the looks of the pictures above--even Broccoli!
In the wild, one of these creatures was observed to store a whole bushel of nuts and corn kernels in just 3 days!
Their scientific name, "Tamias Striatus", means "striped steward, one who stores and looks after provisions".
Natural predators include Long-tailed Weasels, hawks, foxes, Bobcats and house cats.
Sometimes Mother Nature needs a little help!
As with all mammals, diet and feeding techniques are critical to raising a well developed and healthy animal. We cannot over-emphasize the importance of knowing what, how, when and how much to feed. If you feel you must become involved in raising a wild animal, locate a local rehabilitation group and join them. Most offer classes, manuals, proper foods and even medicines required. If you feel you have the "stuff" it takes to become an animal rehabilitator, join today. Groups need all the help they can get. If you don't want to rehab but feel you could help in other ways, please join anyway. Groups are always in need of transporters, cage builders, educators, helpers, telephone assistants, etc. etc.
