ENGL 282: The New York Times Bestseller

ENGL 282 is an introductory level fiction course offering a three-week intensive study of the bestseller during Maymester. We’ll read three novels, one a week:

Sue Monk Kidd’s The Secret Life of Bees
J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
and Dan Brown’s The DaVinci Code

We’ll watch film adaptations of two of these novels, and discuss what makes a book a bestseller.  How did the Harry Potter novels literally rewrite the New York Times bestseller list?  And how do we change our assessments of literary value when financial matters enter into the equation? Please contact Dr. Hammond at 803-313-7044 or at lhammond@gwm.sc.edu if you have questions.
