Suggestions for Taking Exams

Exams are easier to keep up with if you prepare throughout the semester.  Please review the list below for some suggestions.

Before the Exam
  • Keep up with the reading on a daily basis so that you're reviewing material for the test, not reading it for the first time.
  • Highlight or underline passages we discuss in class; I draw quotation identifications only from passages we have discussed in class.
  • Keep good notes in class.
  • Start studying at least several days in advance of the test.
  • Try to predict the questions your professor might ask.  What ideas or texts did class discussions focus heavily on?  These are more likely to be the subject of exam questions than something only mentioned briefly.
During the Exam
  • Please write legibly.
  • When you come into the exam, briefly read over all the questions to familiarize yourself with the test before you start writing.
  • Spend more time on the questions that count more.
  • If you get stuck on a question, skip it and come back to it at the end of the exam.  When you come back to the question, if you're still stumped, at least take a stab at some kind of answer.
  • Leave some space between your answers.  If you finish early, go back and expand on your responses, adding more detail to your discussion.
